寒魄 Cold Moon, Sixth Qi Perfume
寒魄 Cold Moon
Sixth Qi Perfume · 30% Extrait · November 21, 2026 – January 20, 2027
A natural extrait for the final movement of the Bing Wu Fire Horse year. The late fire of autumn has receded. Cold Water takes its seasonal seat, and Dry Metal visits. What autumn gathered, winter must now learn to keep.
Taiyang Cold Water hosts. Yangming Dry Metal visits. Beneath them the year continues its underlying movement of Water, addressed in the classical arrangement to the Heart. Dryness also governs the second half of the year. Cold and dryness appear at two levels each, and the challenge is not merely to create warmth, but to preserve it without exhausting what has been stored.
Cold Moon is built around that distinction. Its movement is inward, but never meant to become inert. Agarwood and sandalwood give it depth, conifers leave a narrow opening above the woods, and small measures of spice keep warmth moving through the darker materials.
Agarwood, sandalwood, benzoin, black spruce, weeping cypress, myrrh, jiang xiang, ambergris, clove, cinnamon bark.
Winter: Closing and Storing
The Su Wen names the three months of winter 閉藏, closing and storing. The will is held 若伏若匿, as though hidden, as though concealed. This is not the stillness of something finished. A seed beneath the earth has not abandoned its life. It has gathered what it needs and stopped spending itself.
Four movements shape this final qi.
At the floor. The annual movement remains Water, operative beneath the turning seasons. In the classical stem-and-branch account its influence is addressed to the Heart.
The half. Since July 22, Yangming Dry Metal has governed the second half of the year. Its movement is inward, contracting, and drying.
The season itself. On November 21, Taiyang Cold Water takes the host position. Winter's own movement is to close and store.
And what visits. Yangming Dry Metal returns as the guest. The dryness governing the half now meets winter's Cold Water in the seasonal position.
Together: Water below and in the season; dryness governing the half and visiting above. The question is no longer how to draw untimely fire downward, as it was with Osmanthus Moon. It is how to keep warmth present within a movement already turning inward.
The Aromatic Composition
Black spruce and weeping cypress give the opening a little evergreen air without the sharp, dispersing brightness of a conventional perfume. Jiang xiang moves through the center, where myrrh, clove, and cinnamon bark hold a restrained warmth.
Below them, agarwood and sandalwood form a deep foundation. Benzoin offers a gentle resinous softness, while ambergris lends continuity and space to the woods. The intention is not a heavy fragrance merely because winter is deep, but a quiet composition with enough interior movement to remain alive.
Opening: Black Spruce · Cypress
Heart: Jiang Xiang · Myrrh · Clove · Cinnamon Bark
Base: Agarwood · Sandalwood · Benzoin · Ambergris
Energetic Directional Core: Descend → Receive → Hold
Pathodynamics: Cold Water repeated at annual and seasonal levels, Dry Metal repeated through the half-year and visiting positions. Cold gathers while dryness contracts.
Orienting Principles: Warm without drying. Gather without weighing down. Descend without stagnating. Hold without becoming inert.
How to Wear It
In the morning, one light spray at the centre of the sternum, or on the clothing over it. In this year's climatic arrangement, the annual Water movement addresses the Heart. The gesture is to gather warmth there rather than send it outward. Let the spruce and cypress open briefly before the agarwood and sandalwood begin their slower descent.
During the day, a little at the wrist or inside the elbow. Return to it when the cold air and dryness seem to draw everything tight. Smell it before adding more. The opening gives way to wood, resin, and a small warmth of spice. The intention is movement within contraction, not more heat poured on top of it.
In the evening, try a trace on a scarf or on clothing over the lower abdomen, in relation to the lower dantian. Where the morning begins at the Heart, the evening gesture goes toward storing below. The darker woods and balsams can be allowed to linger without asking the fragrance to rise or fill the room. Test fabric first, as natural extracts may leave a mark.
Warm without drying. Descend without stagnating. Hold without extinguishing. These are not merely notes of winter, but the alchemical direction of the composition.
30 percent extrait in natural perfumer's alcohol. All natural materials, no isolates and no synthetics. Hand composed in small batch on Hawaiʻi Island.
Apply sparingly. Avoid eyes and sensitive areas. Patch test before use. Contains myrrh, traditionally avoided during pregnancy, and clove and cinnamon bark, which may irritate sensitive skin.
