A natural extrait for the long summer.  Made for the season, when the air thickens and the mind goes foggy with it.

The fourth Qi of the Bing Wu Fire Horse year is a Damp-within-Damp phase. Taiyin Damp Earth hosts. Taiyin Damp Earth visits. Weight settles. Movement slows. Clarity thickens. Beneath it the year still runs cold, and the coursing quality that would break up what has settled has no place in the calendar until spring.

Xing Shen lifts what has settled rather than covering it. It transforms damp aromatically, courses the middle, and returns the head to itself. It supplies the moving quality the season is missing, and warms without adding heat above.

Huo xiang, cang zhu, hou po, weeping cypress, atlas cedar, bergamot, frankincense, cardamom, cistus, black pepper, lemon, Angelica root & others.

Damp is not only weather. In Chinese medicine it is a state of mind, a depressive heaviness and a foggy lack of clarity. When it settles it slows everything it touches, including thought.

This perfume is made for the stretch of the year when that settling is at its heaviest.

Four things are happening at once between late July and the equinox.

At the floor. The whole year moves as cold water and has since January. It works internally, it does not change with the season, and its address is the Heart.

The handover. On July 22 the bright influence that governed the first half of the year stepped down. What takes the second half is dryness, but dryness does not arrive until late November. This stretch sits in the gap between them.

The season itself. From July 22 to September 22 damp holds both the seasonal position and the visiting one. The same quality twice over, with nothing set against it. Damp is heavy, turbid and slow to move. It obstructs the flow of qi and it burdens the middle.

And what is missing. The green coursing quality that would normally break up what has settled has no place in the calendar at this point. It came and went in spring. Nothing is turning the ground.

Together: a cold floor, a fire that left, doubled weight above it, and nothing moving.

What you may notice

Heaviness in the middle rather than heat. A thickness behind the eyes. A chest that feels occupied rather than open. Sleep that does not quite return you to yourself. Appetite present but unrewarding. And the particular tiredness that gets worse from sitting still and better from moving.

How to wear it

Morning, before a humid day. This is a daytime composition. It lifts, and lifting at night might work against you.

One or two touches. Inner wrists, the centre of the sternum, and for this season particularly the temples and the hollow behind the ears, since damp clouds the head and that is where you want the aromatics working.

30 percent extrait in perfumer's alcohol. All natural materials, no isolates and no synthetics. Hand composed in small batch on the Big Island.
