Kyphi: Ancient Egyptian, Modern Senkō

2 grams per tube · 30+ minute slow burn per stick

Kyphi is one of the great aromatic inheritances of ancient Egypt. Elaborate formulas for it were carved into the walls of the Temple of Horus at Edfu, where incense belonged to the living ritual order of the temple. Plutarch later describes Kyphi being offered at the setting of the sun, the hour when daylight withdraws and another mode of perception begins.

This version carries that tradition into the form of Japanese senkō: With a darker architecture of precious woods, temple gums/resins, balsams and cooling aromatics, bound with a wine-and-honey ferment of dried fruit, roots, resins and spice, then kneaded and extruded stick by stick.

The smoke is deep and changeable. Bitter earth gives way to dark fruit, resin, dry wood, powder, spice and medicinal coolness. Notes emerge, disappear and return altered; materials reinforce one another, obscure one another, and sometimes produce strange impressions that belong to none of them individually. It is less a fixed fragrance than a composition continually becoming something else.

But Kyphi obviously reaches beyond fragrance.

At Edfu, Horus is the force through which fragmentation is answered by restoration and disorder by renewed order. His wounded eye becomes the Wedjat “the one that is sound again” an image of healing, regeneration and wholeness restored.  Within this is also the deeper function of temple: not really just a building, but an ordered field meant to transform the one who enters it. Sacred structures are capable of initiating an alchemical change in the observer.

This Kyphi is conceived in that same way.

The formula is the temple compressed into aromatic matter.

The one who makes the offering does not stand outside the Temple of Horus looking backward through history. For the duration of the burn, the temple is made present through scent, fire, attention and offering and Horus becomes the initiatory principle within that encounter: the movement from fragmentation toward wholeness, from obscuration toward sight, from disorder toward a deeper order.

This is also why Kyphi belongs to threshold hours: evening practice, meditation, contemplation, dream, ritual, and those moments when one deliberately leaves the ordinary world a bit behind.

It is not a light or gentle/subtle incense. It is dark, powerful, strange, resinous and alive, if you like soft and lighter, more ethereal or ephemeral scents this may not be for you.  This is a moving and potent experience.

Great Rendition!

A really true to form rendition of kyphi in a stick form. I'm really surprised this is possible yet here it is! This thankfully is not the Galen version with bitumen so it smells great.

Transported to another realm...

This is THE first representation of Kyphi in stick form I am aware of...anywhere. It is a unique presentation in it's extruded senkoh form, offering up a brightening, earthy aroma.

The labdanum, berries, and grass are milling around on the dance floor with frankincense and woods. There is a tang there that hints of the fermentation, a bit of uplifting grassiness in that earthy embrace. Sweet but not cloying, each sniff offers a different contemplative profile.

That's one of the amazing things about this stick, it's not a single scent, it changes over time. I don't think there's a word for it with regards to the olfactory senses, but I would say it "shimmers". Highly recommend this for fans of kyphi in particular, and other people who enjoy uniquely crafted scent
